Why Spyhop?

I donate to organizations that promote conservation, education, and habitat restoration.
I support responsible wildlife encounters.
Photographer Steve Smith fell in love with wildlife photography after encountering killer whales foraging for salmon in the Salish Sea near his home in Seattle, WA. This led to many days and months of his life spent (respectfully) chasing after more sightings and encounters from land, kayaks, motor boats, and beyond. The whales have proven to be a gateway to a deeper connection to place, tidal exchanges, seasonal migrations, birds and marine mammals, and local history, culture, and geography.
When a whale lifts its head above the waterline to look around, this is called a spyhop. We hope that these images give you new perspective and a deeper appreciation for the Salish Sea, its inhabitants, and our opportunities to appreciate and protect this unique ecosystem.
